CRYENGINE Now Available on Steam
The game development engine known for pushing even the greatest computers to their limits is now available for download via Steam. CRYENGINE, developer Crytek’s own proprietary engine has been made available to any aspiring developer who wishes to have their engine power their games.
The engine is available on Steam, though you have to subscribe to the engine on a monthly basis. This is fine, because Crytek charges no royalty fees upon the commercialization of your title, which is in stark contrast to Epic’s Unreal Engine 4. Crytek charges $9.90 a month, whereas Epic will charge $19 a month plus 5% of all gross revenues, including sales, microtransactions, etc.
The subscription gives the user full use of the engine, including:
- access to all graphic features and tools
- the powerful renderer behind Crytek’s Xbox One exclusive Ryse: Son of Rome
- C++ and Lua API interfactes as well as full game implementation written in C++
- Demo Levels and assets for different types of games.
In addition, the subscription will grant developers access to all of the Engine and Tools documentations, as well a programming API references and multiple tutorials by CRYENGINE professionals.
In my opinion, the release of CRYENGINE in such a format will allow more Indie developers the tools to create games utilizing this amazing engine, without having to break the bank. This will result in much better looking and playing games from a variety of sources for years to come.
